Comparative evaluation of surface roughness of addition silicone impression material after immersion in disinfectants with sodium hypochlorite, noni and aloe vera: An in-vitro study.

ABSTRACT
Aim: To evaluate the surface roughness of casts retrieved from addition silicone impression material after immersion in three different disinfectant solutions.
Materials and methods: This in vitro study was conducted on 45 samples with addition silicon impression material (Neopure) and divided into 3groups. Group 1 samples (n=15) were stored in 1% sodium hypochlorite (control group) and group 2(n=15) and group 3(n=15) were immersed in solutions of noni and aloe-vera juice respectively. Surface roughness (Ra) measurements after immersion were measured using surface roughness tester (optical Profilometer). Data were analysed statistically.
Results: statistical results shown that there is no significant change in the surface roughness after immersion in different disinfectants like 1% sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), noni and aloe-vera
Conclusion: Surface roughness values of addition silicone after immersion in 1% NaOCl, noni and aloe-vera was similar and statistically there`s no significant difference between the groups.

Perception towards not replacing missing teeth among the patients in the chengalpattu district- A questionnaire study.

ABSTRACT
Background: There is a need to assess general public perception of tooth loss and the consequences of replacing or not replacing the teeth.
Objective: The objective of the study is to analyze the perception towards not replacing the missing teeth among the patients in Chengalpattu district based on a questionnaire study.
Method: This cross-sectional study design was carried in the dental outpatient department of Prosthodontics and dental Camps in Chengalpattu district between June and September 2022. 200 participants were included in the study in the age group of 18 and 65 years of age. Informed consent was obtained and the study included pre- validated questions to analyse the perception towards not replacing the missing teeth. All the responses were duly recorded, checked for accuracy and statistically analyzed with SPSS, version 2.1 statistical software.
Results: 45% of them are aware of the consequence for not replacing the missing tooth and only 39.5% accepted that not replacing missing teeth intervened in their personal life. 50.5% felt it affected their self-esteem. About 46.5% perceived that not replacing the missing teeth will cause difficulty in eating, 24.5% understood that there would be speech difficulty, 19.5% were esthetically concerned and 9.5% had TMJ pain. According to this study 60% were aware of the available treatment modalities.
Application: The outcome of the study can aid in conduct of community out-reach programs.

Restoring form, function and aesthetics – A comprehensive review of maxillofacial prosthetics.

ABSTRACT:
Background: The goal of maxillofacial prosthetics is to provide patients with custom-designed prostheses that mimic natural facial structures, allowing them to regain vital functions like speech, mastication, swallowing, and facial expressions. It will take a multidisciplinary team with experience in prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology, and facial plastic surgery to advance this field.
Material and Methods: A comprehensive examination of pertinent research and publications in the field of maxillofacial prosthetics was carried out. Using preset keywords pertaining to maxillofacial prosthetics, prosthesis materials, fabrication methods, and patient outcomes, searches were conducted across electronic databases, such as PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Selected articles addressing developments, challenges, and prospects in maxillofacial prosthetics went through screening and eligibility criteria.
Results: Significant advances in materials and fabrication methods, such as the use of silicone elastomers, CAD/CAM technology, and 3D printing, were found in the literature analysis. Two other essential components of maxillofacial prosthetic care that have emerged are interdisciplinary collaboration and patient-reported outcomes. On the other hand, difficulties with prosthesis stability, upkeep, and biointegration were noted, highlighting the need for more study and advancement in the area.
Conclusion: The review emphasizes the significant advancements in patient-centered care, interdisciplinary collaboration, fabrication techniques, and materials that have led to significant progress in maxillofacial prosthetics. In order to improve patient care and quality of life, this review advocates for ongoing advancements in maxillofacial prosthetics and offers insightful information to clinicians, researchers, and educators.

Hydroxyapatite as bone graft material – A narrative review.

ABSTRACT
Objective: This article examines and conducts a critical comparison of various studies regarding application hydroxyapatite as a graft material in various regenerative and reconstructive technique to promote bone formation following surgical procedure.
Background: In dentistry, bone graft is a widely used in regenerative technique to promotes bone formation. The main function of bone grafts is to provide mechanical support and to stimulate osteo-regeneration, with the ultimate goal of bone replacement. Though bone grafts are used extensively, there is lack of a concise knowledge-base on the application of hydroxyapatite graft material.
Methodology: English based literature online and offline, published from 2000 to 2023 is considered to obtain information. This has been analysed and scripted in a contextual manner.
Results: An analysis of available literature reveals that Hydroxyapatite has several advantages in tissue regeneration including minimal donor morbidity, improved biocompatibility, and lack of toxicity.
Conclusion: Hydroxyapatite is a suitable bone substitute material for bone reconstruction, with outcomes similar to that of conventionally used graft materials.
Application: Hydroxyapatite bone grafts are utilized for maxillary sinus floor augmentation following implant placement, periodontal defects, guided bone regeneration, socket preservation and alveolar ridge preservation.

Impact of different flap approaches on the outcome of dental implant surgeries – A review.

ABSTRACT
Objective: This paper reviews the impact of different flap approaches in dental implant surgeries, focusing on their influence on outcomes and the principles guiding their use.
Background: Implant dentistry aims to restore aesthetics and functionality in edentulous patients through osseointegrated implants. Flap elevation during implant placement enhances visibility of landmarks but may lead to complications like morbidity, discomfort, and tissue loss. Various flap designs and principles are employed to address these challenges.
Methods: The review analyzes diverse flap designs, principles, and their implications in implant dentistry, emphasizing their impact on esthetics, bone preservation, and surgical outcomes.
Results: Different flap approaches like flapless, vestibular incision, papilla sparing, and others are assessed in terms of their advantages, limitations, and impact on soft tissue aesthetics, bone resorption, and surgical success. Principles guiding flap design and management for esthetic implant therapy are also outlined.
Conclusion: Preserving inter-dental papilla through appropriate flap designs is crucial in preventing bone denudation and subsequent resorption post-implant placement. Adhering to principles and employing suitable techniques ensures consistent and favorable esthetic outcomes in dental implant surgeries.
Application: This review highlights the significance of flap approaches in implant dentistry, offering insights into optimizing surgical techniques and promoting patient-centered outcomes, contributing to enhanced esthetic and functional restoration.

Prosthodontic management in patient with maxillectomy using a hollow bulb obturator – A case report.

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Maxillectomy abnormalities can lead to oroantral communication, which can affect speech, create facial deformities, and make it difficult to chew and digest food. With the use of obturators, the prosthodontist is crucial in the rehabilitation of these deformities. The primary functions of chewing, phonation, and swallowing are restored by these prostheses. Additionally, they give the patient a good aesthetic appearance. This essay describes a practical instance of creating a reliable hollow bulb obturator. This study set intended to describe the numerous clinical and laboratory procedures involved in prosthetic rehabilitation of an acquired maxillary defect following squamous cell carcinoma dissection.
Case description: A 24 years male patient reported the department of Prosthodontics with an upper midface deformity caused by the surgical excision of a lesion. He had difficulty in speaking and eating. The abnormality, which extended to the floor of the orbit and was identified as Aramany’s class I, was also accompanied by a depressed cheek, a receding nasolabial fold, and decreased lip support. For the same, a hollow bulb obturator was created.
Discussion: Literature describes the use a hollow bulb obturator in cases with maxillofacial deformity including soft palate. This obturator being hollow and light weighted is been accepted by the patient for their sole purpose.

Rehabilitation of sunken cheeks – A magnetic way.

ABSTRACT
Introduction- The face of an individual is his representation to the world. Any disfigurement of the facial structures directly affects the mental well-being of the concerned person which in turn affects the psychological wellbeing too. Facial disfigurement is the least desired physical limitation. The gradual loss of alveolar bone and lack of tonicity of the muscle leads to the cheeks being pulled inside which gives a hollow appearance to the patient’s face.
Case study- As the word suggests, plumpers help in plumping the cheeks as a result enhancing the youthful appearance of the patient. In this case report we have discussed about a magnet retained cheek plumpers in upper complete denture, in a completely edentulous male patient.
Conclusion- To restore the facial esthetics, cheek plumpers can be planned in completely edentulous patients, who cannot otherwise spend for costly surgical and cosmetic procedures.

Manufacturing of a maxillary interim hollow bulb obturator using lost salt technique – A case report.

ABSTRACT
This case study details a streamlined procedure for manufacturing a temporary hollow bulb obturator for an acquired maxillary deformity. Plaster was used to block out the master cast and irreversible hydrocolloid was used to make the final impression. The defect was then filled with table salt and covered with self-cure resin after acrylisation. A small hole was made, the table salt was cleaned out with water, and self-cure resin was poured into it. The patient’s ability to speak and swallow was significantly improved. This method proved to be an easy, quick, and affordable way to create hollow bulb obturators for acquired maxillary defects.
